Roger Hey
Woodwind / Brass

Roger began learning the Cornet in Year 4 at Morawa District High School, sparking a lifelong passion for music. Over the past 46 years, he has been continuously involved in music as a student, performer, conductor, and educator. After retiring from teaching at the end of 2022, Roger looks back on a highly successful career with the WA Education Department. This includes 23 years as Director of Music at Perth Modern School and one year teaching in Canada. His career was defined by providing students with authentic musical experiences, such as organizing and leading numerous performance tours to Eastern States, Europe and China.

Throughout his career, Roger undertook numerous music-related roles in schools, including conducting music performance auditions and assessments. During his time at Perth Modern School, he frequently engaged in collaborative efforts with the Schools' Curriculum and Assessment Service. This involved his role as an examiner for ATAR students and as a consultant for curriculum and assessment requirements. In 2019, Roger returned to Albany to finish his teaching career, having previously taught there in the 1990s. During this second stint in Albany, he taught brass, percussion, and general education classes while also taking on a leadership position.

With his extensive experience in community music organizations as a player and conductor in Perth, Canada, and Albany, Roger has been an active performer and leader since arriving in Albany in 2019. He has performed as a soloist and member of the Albany City Band, and played trombone with the Rainbow Coast Big Band and Albany Sinfonia. In 2020, he was part of the band for the ALOTCO production of Urinetown, and in 2022, he jointly directed the music alongside James Turner for ALOTCO's Mamma Mia, for which they received the 2023 Robert Finley Award for Best Musical Direction in a WA amateur musical. Roger looks forward to adjudicating the Wind Solo sections and Ensembles at the 2024 Albany Eisteddfod.
