Michael Goldschlager, a cello virtuoso born in New York and trained in the United States and at London's prestigious Royal Academy of Music, has garnered worldwide acclaim through recordings and concerts. Currently an Albany resident, he recently recorded J.S. Bach's complete cello suites for ABC Classics/Universal. As a founding member of the acclaimed Macquarie Trio, he recorded most of the core piano trio repertoire. During his extensive New York career, he served as principal cellist of the Orchestra of St. Luke's, performed with Isaac Stern to save Carnegie Hall, and played cello in the Broadway production of "The Elephant Man," which starred David Bowie and Mark Hamill.
As principal cellist of the West Australian Symphony Orchestra for over 6 years, he performed annual concertos with the orchestra. In the 1990s, he was principal cellist of the Australian Chamber Orchestra. Since then, he has been a guest principal cellist with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, and most recently the Australian World Orchestra, touring Australia, Singapore, and India under Maestro Zubin Mehta. He has performed at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music 7 times, including its inaugural and most recent festivals. Recently, he played the complete Bach cello suites at the Perth International Arts Festival. He has also held positions as Senior Lecturer at the University of Western Australia and Head of Strings at WAAPA. More recently, he has given cello recitals and "shows" of the complete Bach suites in Perth and Albany, as well as offered recitals with piano.
